Do More, Wait Less
===
Speaker: [00:00:00] The more you do, the less you wait. This is something I live by. I grew up around people who would let their problems grow until they swelled into mountains and they just pray for those problems to go away and they never would. And that's just something that doesn't sit well with me.
Now that I'm a physical therapist. You can imagine this very much irks me.
I've had patience who were scheduled for a lumbar. Uh, fusion. This is where the surgeon will, um, use metal screws to bring their bones together and make sure that they don't kind of move [00:01:00] again. They're in place.
This could be used to help someone with any bowel or bladder, uh, symptoms. Maybe this person can't lift their toes or, uh, move their feet. Maybe they have their, they have no feeling in their legs. Um, it's really reserved for, I mean, if you're having the most crazy symptoms, you should be getting the surgery.
But by and large, not everyone has those symptoms and they're still getting the surgery, unfortunately. I have been blessed with treating one person who had some numbness, tingling, running down their leg, but that was the extent of it. They were scheduled for the surgery. The surgeon says, I want you to get some physical therapy before [00:02:00] we operate on you.
You know, it is, uh, just. Get you strong before the surgery. And he comes in, I do my evaluation. I determine he doesn't need the surgery at all. He fires back. I have numbness and tingling. And I say, yeah, I know. I'm aware and I can make that go away. So I do. I show him exercises, I give him some stretches and sure enough, he gets up.
He. Walks around says, I can't believe this, and I was about to get surgery, and you're, you're saying, this is all that I have to do. These exercises, these stretches said, that's all that you have to do. If you don't want to do it, then sure, go ahead and get the surgery and these exercises, stretches it, [00:03:00] it doesn't take two hours to perform.
Right, but it does require more than a prayer and giving our problems to someone else,
surgeons, acupuncturists, chiropractors, even some physical therapists. Um, they have these passive approaches. Where they, they do all the work and the patient comes in expecting their work to be done, just lies on the table, walks out and they feel good. Um, but the, the best physical therapy, um, the best physical therapists that I know, um, are getting their patients to do things for themselves.
So they'll, they don't have to come in at all.
