Navigating Pain: Patience and Progress

Speaker: [00:00:00] if you're going through, hell keep going. Some patients only require one treatment session and they are done. Others are going to go through this sort of up and down recovery journey that ultimately leads to you feeling better, but there will be downs.
Your body is trying to adjust to this tweak and its ecosystem. Now you are likely coming to PT because the ecosystem as a stands. Isn't working so well. So we put a little tweak in and now. The muscle that was pulling is no longer pulling or not pulling as much, right?
[00:01:00] So your body says, Hey, why'd you do that? There's gonna be some frustration, there's going to be some fear until the body starts to figure some things out. This is all coming on the heels of a patient who came to me with knee pain. Her quad muscle was pulling at her kneecap and was causing her a great deal of pain.
After I loosened it up and I showed her how to foam roll and stretch, I didn't pull as much, felt better, but the next day. Her pain increased because the quad had no idea what to do. Does it pull? Does it relax? It didn't know, so I told her to stick with it. Stick with the stretches. [00:02:00] Stick with the exercises.
We'll see what happens. Sure enough, her knee pain started to decrease. And then her back pain started to increase. She says, what is going on? And I explained to her that the quad muscle, yes, it does pull at your knee, but it also crosses the hip. So if it's pulling at your hip and the hip is, connected to your back, then it's gonna be pulling at your back.
She says, Ugh. Again, the frustration, the fear of whether or not she's doing something wrong and making anything worse, and I reassured her, look, your knee is feeling better. We're still dealing with the same muscle in your ecosystem that just needs a new job, and it's figuring it out. That's why your knee pain is [00:03:00] better, and eventually your back will feel better too.
This conversation, it comes up a lot because sometimes we are looking for this quick solution and the first sign of pushback that we receive, we think that we have ended up in this sort hell. You must keep going to get out of it.
